A plumbing snake is ideal for minor clogs or to remove occasional blockages, such as too much toilet paper, stuck toys, or food stuck in the line. If your plunger won’t remove the material, a snake is usually enough to remove common clogs, or push it to a larger section of pipe. Snakes can also alert you to more serious problems. For example, if it can’t break through the material, you may have a tree root in the line, and not a buildup of hair. Hydro-jetting, on the other hand, doesn’t just break up clogs. A hyrdo jet cleans your plumbing lines of heavy sludge and grease type materials that build up on pipe walls over time. Snaking doesn’t clean your pipes. It is just used to clear a clog. Hydro jetting can clear almost any clog, it’s not an option for the average homeowner that wants to fix the issue themselves. If your pipes are damaged or weak, a hydro jet may cause more damage, so it is a process that should be done by a professional plumber to avoid damaging your plumbing.

Garbage disposals are designed to last for at least several years with no operating problems. Eventually, they do break down. So when you need your garbage disposal repaired or a new disposal installed, call your friends at Amigo Plumbing.

Most Common Disposal Issues:

Not receiving power – This may seem like an obvious solution, but sometimes the cord comes loose, either from the wall or inside the unit itself. Make sure that it is plugged in, the switch is on, and that the outlet is putting out power.  It could be as simple as a tripped breaker or GFCI outlet needing reset.

Overload – Most garbage disposals have a feature that automatically shuts them off before they get too hot. This feature prevents them from breaking from overheating. You can try hitting the red reset button on the bottom of the unit, however, if this doesn’t work, then you can try the hex wrench trick listed next.

Jammed - If your garbage disposal is jammed, you may be able to fix it yourself. On the bottom of the unit is a spot to use a 1/4in hex wrench to help free the impellers. Insert the hex wrench into the hole on the bottom and move back and forth.  You don’t need to actually turn it, just move it back and forth.  Then try turning the disposal on again.

Stuck Object – This can range from a piece of silverware to a piece of food wrapped around the blades.  Do not try to remove the object if it is sufficiently jammed! If you are going to try to remove the object, make sure to unplug the disposal before you put your hand in the drain.

Clogged – These issues can be caused from a variety of things. Sometimes congealed grease, hair, fibrous food, dirt or something else can cause a clog in the disposal or the drain. No matter what the cause, it’s a problem that needs to be fixed. Please contact Amigo Plumbing to clean out the clog. Our plumbers will use products that are safe for your drains. Additionally, it may be necessary to clean out the P trap, and if the clog is severe, the line may need to be cleared.

Leaks – There are a few reasons that a garbage disposal may be leaking.  All the multiple inlets, outlets, rings, connections, and seals, you could spring a leak a leak at any given time.  The most common places for a leak are between the unit and the sink, the dishwasher connection, a crack in the body or the drain/discharge pipe.

There is one additional problem you might experience here in Arizona. Our water is filled with plenty of dissolved minerals and has a high acid content. The chemicals can eat right through the drum of less expensive disposal units.

There are several reasons why outside faucets leak, especially here in our harsh Arizona climate. Many water spigots have rubber washers. When the faucet is turned off the washer closes off the water supply and prevents leaks. However, extreme heat is hard on rubber and plastic and causes the materials to degrade.

Tankless water heaters are a great way to receive hot water on demand, anywhere in your house. Best of all, you’ll never run out of hot water.

However, many folks are surprised by how long it takes the water to actually reach the faucet or shower. That is where a recirculating pump comes in. It only operates when the water heater does (to avoid voiding the warranty). Leaking Hot Water Heaters

Water Heater Maintenance

Proper maintenance is especially important with our Phoenix hard water. Sediment build up in the bottom of the tank can reduce the efficiency of the heater, clog the water lines, and shorten the life of the unit. Most manufacturers recommend flushing a unit every six months. This can be an easy thing to do, but most of us ignore it because we have enough other things taking up our time.

Step 1:  Connect a hose to the drain outlet near the bottom of the hot water heater. Put the other end of the hose into a cleanout drain or a large bucket.

Step 2: Open the drain spigot and flush the sediment from the bottom of the heater. Leave the water on and flowing until it comes out clear.

Step 3: Close the spigot, disconnect the hose and repeat in six months.

There are plenty of reasons why a water softener malfunctions.

Simply put, when untreated water enters the tank it mixes with salt (sodium). The sodium-saturated water then enters another tank where millions of tiny polystyrene breads attach the sodium molecules. Then the extra salt water is flushed out. Now untreated water enters the tank and the minerals attach themselves to the bead, trading place with the sodium. Then the cycle starts all over again. Problems can occur in any stage of cycle, but specifically:

• If the sodium forms a crust inside the brine tank
